HWHL Newsletter, Second Quarter 2024

A Tribute to Lara Olsen

It’s with heavy hearts that we have learned that Lara Olsen, dedicated supporter and friend of Dr. Chris Hena and the Waterfield Medical Center, has passed away in South Africa. She is survived by her husband and three sons but her legacy lives on at Waterfield and in the surrounding villages. Take a moment to listen to the Waterfield Staff Choir and Dr. Hena as they pay tribute to this amazing woman.

Barrels of Love Supported by Many Congregations

Barrels of Love was founded by Asbury United Methodist Church in Allentown, PA several decades ago to supply Healthy Women, Healthy Liberia and other Liberian ministries with much-needed supplies of medical equipment, medicines, clothing, children’s books, school curriculum and more. Recently additional congregations and their members have begun to participate in this ministry through the collection of pill bottles (Waterfield has a pharmacy but no containers for prescribed medications), flip-flops to prevent the spread of soil-borne parasites and more.

The June 1st shipment of Barrels of Love from Asbury included items from members of Jordan United Church of Christ in Allentown, PA; Grace Lutheran Church in Macungie, PA: First Methodist Church in Eatonton, GA; and St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Milton, PA.

If your congregation would like to participate in collections for the Waterfield Medical Center, please contact us. You would be responsible for the collection, shipping to Allentown, PA and helping us fund shipping to Liberia. This a wonderful opportunity for your congregation to participate in hands-on mission.

Waterfield Medical Center Saving Lives During Childbirth

According to International Health Partners, “Liberia has one of the world’s highest maternal mortality rates and one of the highest infant mortality rates. This means that giving birth is often lethal.” Thanks to your donations to HWHL, lives are being saved as mothers give birth at the Waterfield Medical Center’s new Maternity Addition. In the past week alone three healthy babies were delivered at Waterfield. Your partnership with HWHL has made this ministry a reality.

Testimonials from HWHL Patients

Each quarter we will include a testimonial from one our HWHL patients so you can see first hand how lives are impacted by Dr. Chris Hena and her team. Let’s celebrate the incredible work of healthcare providers like the Waterfield Medical Center team, who prioritize dignity and love in every patient interaction. Our plan is to continue to send out these newsletters on a quarterly basis so we don’t overwhelm your inboxes with emails! For updates between newsletters, please visit our web site and Facebook page.

We treasure your partnership in this mission. Your donations to this ministry are greatly appreciated. We’d love to hear from you anytime with your comments or questions.
