Giving Thanks
As we write to you in this season of Thanksgiving, we want to send our heartfelt thanks to you, our partners in the mission of Healthy Women, Healthy Liberia. This ministry to those in need in Liberia simply wouldn’t be possible without your support through prayer and donations.
Each year additional services are added at HWHL’s Waterfield Medical Center so we can reach more of our brothers and sisters in Margibi County, Liberia. Most recently, we’ve added our Maternity Suite where 50 babies have been delivered in the last year. And our new Surgical Suite has been furnished with our first Surgery Outreach planned for 2025. Future plans call for an X-ray facility to be built at Waterfield. The medical center is now open to patients 24 hours a day.
For this growth to be possible, we need the continued support of you, our partners in this mission. We’d like to offer two suggestions to streamline the giving process:
Recurring Gifts To ensure a steady income from month to month, recurring gifts are the most helpful. One straightforward way to set up your recurring gifts is through The Advance. Regardless of your denominational affiliation, when you give through The Advance, the United Methodist Church covers all of the administrative costs so 100% of your donation reaches Healthy Women, Healthy Liberia. Set up your online recurring giving here.
Qualified Charitable Distributions With the higher IRS standard deduction, you might find that you will be unable to itemize your charitable giving on your 2024 tax return. Did you know the gift of a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) benefits doners age 70½ and up? The Qualified Charitable Distribution is an excellent way to show your support for Healthy Women, Healthy Liberia and receive tax benefits in return. As you plan your required minimum distributions (RMD) for 2024 and future years, consider using your IRA account to make the most of your charitable giving. You receive a tax benefit even if you take the standard deduction!
It’s important to consider your tax situation before deciding whether to make a charitable contribution from your IRA. Be sure to share this gift plan with your financial advisor before proceeding.
To qualify:
- You must be 70½ or older at the time of gift.
- Distribution must be made directly from a traditional IRA account by your IRA administrator to Healthy Women, Healthy Liberia.
- Gifts must be outright, meaning they go directly to Healthy Women, Healthy Liberia.
Tax Benefits:
- IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions are excluded as gross income for federal income tax purposes on your IRS Form 1040.
- The gift counts toward your required minimum distribution for the year in which you made the gift.
- You could avoid a higher tax bracket that might otherwise result from adding an RMD to your income.
About HWHL:
- The foundation for Restoring Women’s Healthcare to Liberia, Inc, which does business as Healthy Women, Healthy Liberia is a 501(c)(3) charity.
- EIN 27-4540631
- Send distributions to:

In-Person Board Meeting
After five years, the Healthy Women, Healthy Liberia Board of Directors were able to meet in person (with some joining by Zoom)! Thank you to Eatonton First Methodist Church in Eatonton, GA for graciously hosting. On Sunday following the meeting, Dr. Chris Hena delivered this inspiring message (fast forward to 49 minutes).
We’re grateful for God’s blessings over the past year and excited to plan for the years ahead!
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it, the elders obtained a good testimony”

HWHL Named a Top-Rated Charity for 2024 by Great Nonprofits

We are honored to be classified as a top-rated charity by Great Nonprofits again in 2024. The reviews are a testament to our Medical Director, Dr. Chris Hena and the work being done by Healthy Women, Healthy Liberia at Waterfield Medical Center.
Our plan is to continue to send out these newsletters on a quarterly basis so we don’t overwhelm your inboxes with emails! For updates between newsletters, please visit our web site and Facebook page.
We treasure your partnership in this mission. Your donations to this ministry are greatly appreciated. We’d love to hear from you anytime with your comments or questions.
